The Chamber defines a Woman of Action as “an individual who embodies resilience, leadership, and compassion, actively working to effect positive change in her community and beyond.”

Wilma was selected because she has served as the driving force behind efforts to beautify Brighton and enrich the community by commissioning outstanding, impactful artwork in her role as BCAC president and chair of the Brighton Public Art Committee (BPAC). Under her leadership, for example, BCAC and BPAC have collaborated with various artists to complete and install the Historic Brighton at Founders Plaza mural, the Women of Inspiration mural, and numerous sculptures located throughout Brighton.

“It was an honor to be selected, as there are many in our community who deserve recognition,” Wilma said. “I believe it is important to be active in the community you live in to make it a better place—not just for yourself but for all community members.”

Since 2022, the Brighton Chamber has celebrated International Women’s Month by recognizing one local woman on each day of March. According to the Chamber, “March 8th, commemorated globally as International Women’s Day for over thirty years, serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing quest for gender equality and the celebration of women’s achievements.”

The Chamber used its social media presence to spotlight diverse and inspiring women representing Brighton businesses, non-profit organizations, and the general Brighton community. As the Chamber explained on its Facebook page, a Woman of Action “serves as a catalyst for meaningful progress and inspires others to join her in creating a more equitable and inclusive society. A Woman of Action embraces challenges with determination, leveraging her skills and influence to amplify marginalized voices and foster lasting impact.”

Wilma and the other dedicated BCAC and BPAC members continue to plan projects that increase cultural awareness and spread the joy of artistic expression throughout Brighton and surrounding areas.
